SAFIYA NOBLE LECTURE:

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6TH, 2018
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM, 10 EAST PYNE

“Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism”

In Algorithms of OppressionHow Search Engines Reinforce Racism Safiya Umoja Noble challenges the idea that search engines like Google offer an equal playing field for all forms of ideas, identities, and activities. Data discrimination is a real social problem; Noble argues that the combination of private interests in promoting certain sites, along with the monopoly status of a relatively small number of Internet search engines, leads to a biased set of search algorithms that privilege whiteness and discriminate against people of color, specifically women of color.

Join us for a wine and cheese reception immediately after.

PANDEMIC PORTAL VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE

AUGUST 7, 2020, ZOOM LINK BELOW

Students at the Ida B Wells JUST Data Lab will showcase the work they have done over the summer in collaboration with community organizations.

The IDA B. WELLS Just Data Lab brings together students, educators, activists, and artists to develop a critical and creative approach to data conception, production, and circulation. Our aim is to rethink and retool data for justice.

The Lab is currently focused on developing the Pandemic Portal— a set of resources developed in collaboration with community organizations that will remain freely accessible for future research, education, and advocacy.
